Postdoc position at the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology of the University of Seville

1-year postdoc position in Microbial Biotechnology

We offer a 1-year postdoctoral position within the Microbial Biostabilizers Research Group (BIO-320) at the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology of the University of Sevilla, Spain. The opening is temporary and available immediately or as agreed. Options for extension could be offered. We invite applications from candidates with relevant research experience and interest to conduct research and innovation activities on the framework of the EU-H2020-funded project “Sustainable Exploitation of bio-based Compounds Revealed and Engineered from natural sources” – SECRETed.

Project

SECRETed is a multidisciplinary project in which partners from different European Universities and companies, participate to exploit the potential of marine and extreme environments with the aim to produce innovative industrial products for the agrochemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and chemical sectors. The main goal of the project is the development of novel molecules with tailor-made properties by the combination of biosynthetic genes of amphiphilic compounds (biosurfactants and siderophores) produced by marine and extremophilic microorganisms, based on machine-learning algorithms. New optimized production strains will be designed, built and tested using Synthetic Biology and Systems Biology techniques, which also allow the development of viable and sustainable industrial processes.

Qualifications

Candidate must hold a University degree in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or related fields, equivalent to a European University PhD. Good working knowledge of standard molecular biology, microbiology, and biochemistry techniques. It will be particularly qualifying to have demonstrated expertise in extraction and purification of bioactive compounds, molecular characterization of biosynthetic pathways, heterologous expression of proteins, genetic engineering or cultivation and optimization of strains in bioreactors. Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in English to report results periodically, and to produce high-quality research material for publication and dissemination activities. Highly motivated and with ability to work as part of a team, analytical and organizational capacities.
